Environmentally Sustainable Desert House Design Idea

DeRenouard Residence is located in California, a desert bioregion within walking distance of the surrounding ocean where temperatures can reach over 40 degrees in summer and drop below zero in winter season. This Environmental Sustainable Desert House Design Idea was chosen as Sustainable House of the Year by the magazine San Diego Home & Garden Magazine and featured in the book Sustainable Architecture Low-Tech.

Environmental characteristics, walls insulated with straw bales make the desert house structure act as a thermo that retains heat in winter and cool air in summer. Solar panels help heat the bottom this sustainable desert house including swimming pool, high ceilings and operable windows allow heat to enter space and return to natural convection exit.

The largest rooftop projected on the walls facing south minimize solar heat during the summer and get the benefit of passive solar heat during the winter. Trogir extends the slate floor on concrete slabs and plaster walls provides additional thermal mass during the winter cold mesos.
The R-40 is a cellulose material used to insulate the ceiling and is totally organic. A portion of the northern edge of the building fits into the hillside so that leverages the thermal storage of the crust of the earth. The architect was calculating the entire design of this desert house to support Environmentally Sustainable.
